Lovio — marketing kit + brand-graduation plan

Created: 2026-05-21 Status: Strategy doc, NOT yet executing. Lovio is in waitlist mode — the kit becomes deployable after the v1 capsule-recording UI ships. Companion docs:

TL;DR

Lovio is fundamentally not Graphene. Same monorepo, completely different go-to-market.

  • Audience: older (35–65), emotionally motivated, often buying for someone else
  • Trigger: life milestone OR loss/grief — both high-intent, very different copy needed
  • Wedge: voice cloning + time-locked delivery (Storyworth is text-only, FutureMe has no voice, voice-memo apps have no time-lock)
  • Channel mix: Meta/Instagram + Pinterest + Google Search beat Reddit/TikTok for this demo. Editorial/PR matters more than paid-acquisition velocity.
  • Cycle: gifting calendars (Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduation, December holidays, anniversaries) drive natural demand spikes — plan campaigns to land 2-3 weeks before each
  • Domain: graduate to lovio.io as a sibling brand at parity with graphene.fm and write.cafe. Plan in §5.

1. ICP — full deep dive

Primary persona: the legacy-minded parent or grandparent

Demographics:

  • 35–55 (parent of young kids), OR 55–75 (grandparent / late-career)
  • Mid-to-high income; some have already started "estate-thinking" but most haven't
  • Active iPhone user; uses Photos religiously; probably has 10,000+ unsorted videos of kids
  • Reads The Atlantic, NYT lifestyle, Cup of Jo, parenting Substacks. Not on TikTok much. Sometimes on Instagram.

The internal monologue (paste-ready ad-copy fuel):

  • "I want my voice to be there when she turns 18."
  • "My dad died and I have one voicemail of his. One."
  • "My kid is going to forget what I sounded like at this age."
  • "I keep meaning to write her a letter for her wedding day. I never do."

Ritual being replaced:

  • Recording voice memos that never get replayed (5+ years of dormant iPhone memos)
  • Greeting cards (perpetual underwhelm — "Hallmark wrote this for me, not from me")
  • "Open in 10 years" letters squirreled away in drawers that get lost in moves
  • Storyworth subscriptions where 70% of paid users never finish the book

Pain triggers — ranked by conversion intensity:

TriggerIntensityEthical handling
Grandparent passing → "I wish I had more of their voice"highestMost powerful, also most sensitive — never lead with death imagery; lead with future preservation framing instead
New baby → "Capture this moment for when they're 18"highEasiest to handle; "capture today for tomorrow's milestones" is the lead
Kid's milestone coming up (graduation, wedding, sweet 16, bar/bat mitzvah)highTime-bounded urgency works in ad copy
Self-aging awareness ("I sound different than I did 5 years ago")mediumQuieter copy; less viral but converts steadily
Anniversary gift ("we've been together 25 years and I want to give him something he can replay")mediumThe buyer ≠ recipient case

Secondary persona: the gift-giver

Distinct enough to deserve its own ICP slot.

Who: Often a spouse, adult child, or close sibling buying Lovio FOR someone else. Common patterns:

  • 30-50 yo daughter buying for parent ("So Dad can record stories for the grandkids")
  • 60-70 yo retiree buying for self-but-as-gift ("I want to leave this for my kids")
  • 25-35 yo gifting to a recently-married couple OR new parents ("Capture this season for the kids who'll come later")

Channel implication: Gift-givers shop ON the gifting platforms (Etsy "thoughtful gifts" searches, Pinterest "meaningful gifts for grandma" boards, gift-guide editorial). They are NOT primarily reading Reddit. They ARE reading gift roundups in Real Simple, Apartment Therapy, NYT Wirecutter.

Pricing implication: Gift-givers will pay more for an actual physical artifact (a card, a USB, a printed transcript book). Lovio's pure-digital nature is a friction point in the gift context — consider a "Gift the recipient a printed unlock card" add-on at +$15.

What Lovio is NOT (positioning negatives)

Audit your own copy to make sure you're not accidentally pitching to these audiences — they convert poorly and inflate CAC:

  • Diary lockers / privacy obsessives → they want encryption + secrecy; Lovio is the opposite (time-released to someone else)
  • Productivity hackers → "future self letter to keep accountable" is FutureMe's territory; do not compete there
  • Generic AI-voice enthusiasts → people who want to mess around with voice cloning will use ElevenLabs directly; Lovio is for the use case, not the tech
  • Memoir-writers → Storyworth wins them; we win the IMMEDIATE-emotional segment, they win the autobiography segment

2. Competitor landscape (deep)

CompetitorPriceWhere they winWhere Lovio wins
Storyworth$99/yrMemoir-as-a-book; structured weekly prompts; physical book at year-endNo voice; takes a whole year; written prompts feel like homework; 70% never finish
FutureMe.orgFree / Pro $20/yrFree; text-to-future-self is universalNo voice; text-only; no recipient-to-someone-else flow; aesthetically tired
Voice memo apps (iOS native)FreeFrictionless captureNo time-lock; no scheduled delivery; no relational targeting; mortality risk
EternaWords / Hereafter~$200/yr"After-death message" framing; locked-down legalHeavier funeral-tech framing → smaller addressable market; Lovio's "milestone gift" framing 10× broader
TimeTreasure / TimeCapsule.com$10-50 one-shotPhysical capsule with cards insideNo voice; physical → high churn; novelty gift segment only
Greeting cards (Hallmark/American Greetings/Paperless Post)$5-20/cardUniversal; gift-shop distributionGeneric copy ≠ your voice; one-time; no future-anchored delivery

The Lovio wedge in one sentence:

"The voice of someone you love, delivered at the moment they need to hear it most."

That sentence is the test. Every ad creative, landing variant, and email subject line should ladder to it.

3. Channels mapped to ICP

What WORKS for Lovio (priority order)

3.1 Meta (Instagram-first, Facebook second)

Older + emotional buyers index high on Meta. Instagram for the parent demo (35-50); Facebook for grandparents (55-75).

Audiences to target:

  • Interest stack: parenting, milestone gifts, grandparenting, anniversaries, Hallmark, Storyworth, FutureMe — also "Sentimental gifts" (an actual FB interest)
  • Lookalike from waitlist signups (1% LAL becomes the workhorse once you have ~300 waitlist emails)
  • Retargeting from /lovio + /lovio/demo visitors who didn't sign up

Creative shapes that work for this demo:

  • Carousel ads showing a real-feeling capsule unlock experience (5 cards: morning of milestone → email arrives → unlock screen → voice plays → recipient's face)
  • Vertical video reels of the unlock moment (~15s, no music or very subtle piano — let the voice carry it)
  • Static "letter" creative — a photo of an envelope with a recipient's name handwritten, headline below

Avoid:

  • Stock-photo families. The aesthetic of FB ads has trained this demo to skip those instantly.
  • Death imagery in ad creative. Even though grief is a real trigger, the Meta platform itself flags death-imagery ads and you'll spend half your budget on review queues.

3.2 Pinterest

Underrated for this exact demo. The "meaningful gifts" / "letter to my future child" / "thoughtful gift for grandma" search behavior is rich here.

Approach:

  • Pinned images: visual mockups of a capsule unlock email (looks like a letter envelope), captioned with the use case
  • Boards to seed: "Meaningful gifts for new parents", "Letters to my future child", "Anniversary gift ideas"
  • Search keyword targeting: "letter to my future self", "voice memo for kids", "time capsule baby", "milestone gift ideas"

Pinterest's audience LITERALLY plans for future milestones months in advance. This is Lovio's natural plumbing.

3.3 Google Search (high-intent, low volume but premium quality)

Keyword groups (exact + phrase):

  • "letter to my future self" / "future self letter app"
  • "voice message to future" / "voice time capsule"
  • "gift for grandparent grandchild" / "meaningful gift new dad"
  • "how to record a message for my future child"
  • "Storyworth alternatives" (competitor terms)

Why this works: People who type these queries are 90%+ of the way to buying SOMETHING. The job is to make sure Lovio is what they buy.

Budget: Lower than Meta — $50–100/mo to start, ~$1-3 CPC.

3.4 Editorial / PR (slow, compounding)

Lovio is a "human interest"-shaped product. It gets covered.

Outlets to pitch (warmest to coldest):

  • Cup of Jo (parenting + lifestyle audience exactly matches ICP)
  • The Strategist (NYMag) "Best gift" roundups — especially around Mother's Day / Father's Day cycles
  • Real Simple, Apartment Therapy gift roundups
  • Substack lifestyle writers (Anne Helen Petersen, Cup of Jo, Lyz Lenz overlap audience)
  • Tech newsletters: Andrew Wilkinson's, Sahil Bloom's (B2C product launch coverage)

Pitch angle: "We built a way to send your voice to someone you love on a date they need to hear it." Not "AI voice cloning startup." Lead with the use case, not the tech.

What DOESN'T work for Lovio

Reddit

The demographic isn't here at scale. Niche subs exist (r/grandparents, r/Parenting, r/grief) but the moderation cultures vary wildly. r/grief in particular is explicitly hostile to commercial promotion — DO NOT post there. Save Reddit for organic founder-voice "I made this for X" stories on r/Entrepreneur or r/SideProject as launch confirmation, not as a primary channel.

TikTok

Possible but high-risk for Lovio. The "open in 25 years" videos that go viral on TikTok are typically grief content, which we don't want to lead with. If you do test TikTok, lead with the joyful milestone version (newborn → 18 unlock) and not the grief version (recording before dying), even though the latter would get more views.

Apple Search Ads

Lovio isn't an app yet (no iOS app). Skip entirely until/unless there's a native app.

Influencer Reddit/TikTok creator drops

For Graphene, these are valuable. For Lovio, the audience isn't on those platforms at the right concentration. Skip.

4. Content strategy — emotional-first, never feature-first

For Graphene, feature-led content works (the AI-writer-persona angle IS the wedge and we can lead with it). For Lovio, feature-led content fails — voice cloning sounds dystopian when stated as a feature, profoundly moving when shown in use.

Three content shapes that work

Shape A — The recipient unlock reaction Voice-over: the actual capsule audio (or a real-feeling recreation). Visual: the recipient (anonymized; back-of-head shots, hands holding phone, tears, no faces). Outcome: viewer feels what receiving Lovio feels like.

Shape B — The before-after "This is what we have of my dad's voice." (3-sec voice clip from an answering-machine recording, distorted by age). Cut to: "This is what my kids will have of mine." (clear capsule unlock). Hits the loss-aversion driver without explicit grief imagery.

Shape C — The future-anchored frame "Today: October 14, 2026. I'm 38. My daughter is 6 months old." Cut to a date 18 years from now. "October 14, 2044. She's 18. This is what she'll hear today." Capsule plays. Resolves on the recipient (still anonymized).

Editorial calendar (gift-cycle anchored)

Lovio's natural cycles aren't weekly — they're milestone-based.

MonthAnchorLead-time to start spend
Late AprMother's DayStart spend Apr 15, peak May 1-10
Mid MayGraduation seasonStart spend May 1, peak May 15-Jun 5
Early JunFather's DayStart spend Jun 1, peak Jun 10-18
Early AugBack-to-school ("preserve this moment before they grow up")Modest spend; Aug 1-15
Mid NovHoliday gifting seasonHeaviest spend window of the year; start Nov 15, run through Dec 22
Mid FebValentine's Day + anniversary clusterModest spend Feb 1-13

Plan 8-week creative production timelines for the big two (Mother's Day, December holidays).

5. lovio.io graduation plan

Lovio currently lives at hivejournal.com/lovio — a feature on the HiveJournal umbrella. Operator has the lovio.io domain ready to bring online.

Why graduate (not stay on the subpath)

  • SEO: dedicated domain authority builds independently. lovio.io/voice-time-capsule will rank better than hivejournal.com/lovio/voice-time-capsule because Google scopes brand signals to domains.
  • Marketing attribution: Meta + Google + Pinterest dashboards report per-domain. Mixing Lovio with HiveJournal makes the funnel unreadable.
  • Brand identity: the emotional positioning Lovio needs is incompatible with HiveJournal's "journaling + productivity" frame in the same browser tab. Separate domain lets each chrome breathe.
  • Acquisition exit optionality: a standalone domain is a cleaner asset if Lovio ever gets spun out or sold.

Cost of NOT graduating

  • Every Lovio ad URL has to be hivejournal.com/lovio?... — confusing for buyers ("wait, what is HiveJournal?")
  • Lovio's emotional brand chrome leaks into HiveJournal users' navbar / footer
  • Trust signals (privacy policy, terms, contact) reference HiveJournal which dilutes Lovio's promise

Technical migration (mirror of how graphene.fm + write.cafe were set up)

  1. DNS: add lovio.io and www.lovio.io to the same DNS host as the other brand domains. CNAME both to cname.vercel-dns.com.
  2. Vercel: add lovio.io + www.lovio.io to the same Vercel project that serves graphene.fm and write.cafe. Verify domain ownership (DNS TXT record).
  3. Middleware: add a host rewrite rule in middleware.ts parallel to the graphene.fm + write.cafe blocks:
    if (host === 'lovio.io' || host === 'www.lovio.io' || host === 'staging.lovio.io') {
      if (url.pathname === '/' || url.pathname === '') {
        url.pathname = '/lovio'
        return NextResponse.rewrite(url)
      }
      return NextResponse.next()
    }

  4. Brand metadata: add a lovio.io entry to the BRAND_META map in layout.tsx so per-host title/description/OG image work like graphene + writecafe.
  5. Branded chrome detection: extend branded-surface.ts to recognize lovio.io as a brand host. Returns a new isLovio: true field from useBrandedSurface.
  6. PLATFORM_ORIGINS: add https://lovio.io, https://www.lovio.io, https://staging.lovio.io to services/request-origin.ts so CORS + checkout redirects allow the new domain.
  7. Branded auth emails (PR #20): add a 'lovio' brand to the Brand union in auth-emails/render.ts. Build a lovio-signup.ts template. Frontend signup page.tsx detectBrandSlug() extends to detect lovio.io.
  8. Resend: verify lovio.io as a sender domain at Resend. DNS records (SPF + DKIM).
  9. Stripe statement descriptor: when monetization ships, add a Lovio-specific suffix to stripe-statement-descriptors.ts (LOVIO is 5 chars — fits).
  10. Staging variant: staging.lovio.io mirrors staging.graphene.fm / staging.write.cafe. CNAME the staging subdomain to Vercel staging.

Estimated work: 4-6 hours of focused code + ~2 hours of DNS/dashboard config. Comparable to write.cafe's graduation (PR #11 era).

Timing the migration

Don't migrate until v1 capsule UI ships. The current /lovio page is a waitlist landing — graduating that to lovio.io is fine but doesn't gain much yet. Plan to land the migration the same week v1 launches, so the marketing kit + the live product + the domain all hit at once.

6. Paid acquisition kit (post-waitlist)

Not deployable yet (no product to convert into). When v1 ships, the budget breakdown:

Starter — $300/mo

ChannelAmountNotes
Meta (Instagram + Facebook)$150$100 retargeting site visitors + $50 cold prospect to legacy-minded-parent interest stack
Pinterest$75Promoted pins on gift-keyword targeting
Google Search$50Brand defense + competitor terms (Storyworth, FutureMe)
Editorial outreach (warm)$25"Buy editor a coffee" / press kit hosting / no actual paid placement yet

Default — $750/mo (recommend starting here once v1 is steady)

ChannelAmount
Meta$400 ($250 retargeting + $150 LAL + cold)
Pinterest$150
Google Search$100
Editorial / PR (paid placements in gift-guide roundups)$100

Scale — $2500/mo (post Mother's Day cohort, if CAC < $40)

ChannelAmount
Meta$1200
Pinterest$500
Google Search + Display$400
Editorial / PR$200
YouTube pre-roll (parenting / lifestyle channels)$200

KPI targets

  • CAC for waitlist signup → paid conversion: < $35 (Lovio AOV is probably $39-$99 one-shot or $5-9/mo recurring; CAC ceiling = ~LTV / 1.5)
  • CTR on Meta carousel ads: > 1.5% (this demo skews higher than Graphene)
  • Pinterest CPC: < $0.40 (gift-keyword Pinterest CPCs are notoriously cheap)
  • Email-to-signup conversion (from waitlist drip): > 25% — see §8

7. The grief vertical — handle with care

About 20-30% of inbound interest in voice time-capsules comes from grief / mortality drivers. This audience converts at 3-5× the rate of the milestone audience BUT:

  • The marketing risk is severe. A misstep here (death-imagery ads, "what would you say if you knew you were dying" copy) ends up in screencap-and-publish "tech bro tone-deaf" Twitter cycles.
  • The customer-support load is heavier. Grieving users send long emails, need empathetic responses, sometimes need refunds.

Rules of engagement for the grief vertical

  1. Never advertise to grief audiences directly. Don't target Facebook groups for widows/widowers. Don't run search ads on "voice of my deceased relative" type queries. Let those users find you through editorial or organic search.
  2. Don't show death imagery in any creative ever. Show milestones (graduations, weddings, birthdays).
  3. In the unlock email, never auto-deliver to a recipient if the sender hasn't confirmed delivery (a sender who passed away mid-cycle would result in an unprompted recipient surprise that could be re-traumatizing). The existing lovio-delivery.ts handles this — verify the consent gate.
  4. In support flows, train responders (yourself, for now) on the grief vernacular. Specifically: never say "we're sorry for your loss" in a copy-paste way — write each one. Customers can tell.
  5. Pricing transparency. Grief customers are price-sensitive in a way milestone customers aren't (they're often spending from a fixed mental budget tied to funeral expenses). Don't surprise them with renewal charges.

Where grief users naturally find Lovio

  • Editorial coverage (Atlantic, NYT, Cup of Jo) is the primary channel
  • Organic search ("voice of my dad time capsule")
  • Word of mouth from existing customers
  • Hospice + end-of-life planning communities (RARE — proceed only after launch is steady)

8. Waitlist nurture sequence (currently empty — biggest immediate gap)

Lovio has a waitlist (table: lovio_waitlist, ~? rows depending on traffic since launch). Today: signup → silence → product launches → mass email. That's the worst possible nurture.

Recommended 4-email drip (post-waitlist signup)

DaySubjectGoalLever
0"Welcome to Lovio — what we're building, and why"Confirm signup + set expectation that they're earlyFounder voice; 200 words; signed by Sandon
7"What kind of capsule would you want to send?"Get them imagining USING the product → primes activation when v1 shipsSoft poll: "Reply with the recipient + occasion you'd most want." (Replies are gold for marketing copy too)
21"A behind-the-scenes look at voice cloning ethics"Trust-building + differentiates from creepy AI uses400-word essay; the kind of content lifestyle publications quote
45"We're 2 weeks from launch. Want the founder invite list?"Pre-launch warm list — high-conversion segment for v1 dayReply-to-confirm gates them onto a priority list; converts way better than a blanket launch email

Implementation

This rides on the branded auth emails infrastructure from PR #20. Add lovio-specific drip templates under apps/backend/src/services/auth-emails/templates/lovio-drip-day-0.ts etc. Trigger via a new lovio-waitlist-drip cron that runs daily, picks rows where created_at falls into the day-0/7/21/45 buckets, and sends the corresponding template (idempotent via notified_at columns).

Estimated work: 6-8 hours of writing + ~2 hours of cron + idempotency code.

9. Pre-launch checklist (before flipping any of this on)

  • v1 capsule recording + scheduled delivery shipped (currently waitlist-only)
  • lovio.io domain graduated (§5 — DNS + middleware + brand metadata + auth emails)
  • Lovio-specific Resend sender domain verified
  • Waitlist nurture drip live (§8 — 4 emails, cron, idempotency)
  • Privacy policy + terms specific to Lovio (NOT inherited from HiveJournal — Lovio handles voice biometric data which has its own legal posture in IL, TX, WA + EU)
  • Stripe products created (Live + Test mode) for whatever pricing v1 launches with — currently no Lovio products exist
  • /lovio brand-aware checkout success_url (mirrors PR #29 work — verify the request-origin helper resolves correctly when the request originates on lovio.io)
  • At least 2 editorial outlets pitched and warmed up before public launch (Cup of Jo + The Strategist recommended as first picks)
  • Conversion pixels installed for Pinterest (Pinterest Tag) + extend the existing analytics.ts wrapper alongside GA4/Meta/Reddit/TikTok
  • Customer support inbox (lovio@hivejournal.com or hello@lovio.io once domain is up) with response-time target documented (12h max for grief inquiries)

10. What's NOT in this doc (intentionally)

  • App Store launch — Lovio web-first is correct for the demo (less likely to use new mobile apps). Defer iOS app until web shows traction.
  • Affiliate program — too early; no LTV data yet.
  • B2B / employer wellness — Lovio fits inside "Family Care" benefit packages, but selling to HR is a totally different motion. Park until consumer business has scaled.
  • Physical product extensions — printed transcript books, USB keepsakes, framed transcripts. All real opportunities but they're V3 retention plays, not V1 acquisition plays.
  • Founder content / personal newsletter — could be powerful but bandwidth-intensive; revisit after v1 launch.

Revisit cadence

Mirror the Graphene marketing-plan-revisit cadence — re-evaluate after v1 launches (so post-Q3 likely) and then every 60 days. The next scheduled revisit should fire 30 days post-launch with hard data on which channels actually converted.
