EmberKiln — studio name clearance brief

Status: name chosen (2026-06-25), formal trademark clearance NOT yet done. Brand decision + rejected alternates: memory project_emberkiln_rebrand.

⚠️ This doc was rewritten during the Allotrope → EmberKiln rename. The prior version was the clearance brief for the Allotrope name; its facts (incl. USPTO Reg. 6011111, the Allotrope Foundation lab-data mark, and the "carbon allotropes" etymology) belong to that name and are preserved in git history — they do not apply to EmberKiln. The EmberKiln-specific picture below comes from informal landscape research, not a live register pull.

Decision context

"EmberKiln" was chosen 2026-06-25 to replace Allotrope, which was retired for being hard to remember and for a cleverness (graphene is a carbon allotrope) that is illegible to a general audience. Rejected kiln-family alternates and why: Kilnworks (crowded ceramics-studio namespace, no clean .com), Kilnwave / Kilnlight (the "kiln" + glide-onset suffix elides into "killing-X" — off-ethos for a no-violence brand), Kilncave (man-cave/hobby-den drag), Kilnblast ("blast" reads violent/spammy). EmberKiln is kiln-terminal (zero "kill" phonetic defect), carries a firelit-craft story, and had a clean availability picture.

Architecture this name slots into: graphene.fm = distribution (consume) · EmberKiln = the creation/production studio (audiobook creator + Scene Studio

• Reverse Screenplay Engine) · Odessa = the flagship product (journal → fiction). Concept fit: a kiln fires raw material into a finished form — the studio fires one story into many forms (audiobook, scene, screenplay, film).

What the name means (the brand spine — use this when writing copy): the ember is the story — the living heart, the heat at the center; the kiln is the structure around it that fires that story into a form and carries it to its audience so it lands well-received. The ember is the one story (the constant core that survives every transformation); the kiln is what gives it every form. This maps to the two-tone wordmark — gold "Ember" (the story/heart) + teal "Kiln" (the cool vessel/structure) — and to the v2 two-tone mark (orange "E" core inside the teal open-book/kiln). Voice note: lean on land / reach / be received, not consumption verbs (see [[feedback_brand_voice_no_consumption_metaphors]]).

Scan each for live (registered/pending) marks in entertainment/software/media:

Relevant Nice classes: 41 (production/entertainment service), 9 (app/downloadables), 42 (SaaS platform), 38 (streaming).

2. Informal landscape (2026-06-25) — no live media/software collision found

Web search surfaced no live "EmberKiln" business in film, software, or media. Near-misses, none in our lane:

• "Kiln Embers" — a Wemyss Malts blended Scotch whisky (different word order, Class 33).
• "Ember's Kiln" — a Minecraft mod.
• A low-profile band ("EmberKiln" / "theemberkilns") and a Guild Wars character name.
• The bare emberkiln.com is registered but shows no active business (likely parked).

No "EmberKiln Foundation" / Reg. 6011111 exists — that registration is the Allotrope Foundation's and applied only to the retired name.

Clearance question for the attorney: run a full USPTO + EUIPO live pull for "EmberKiln" in classes 9/38/41/42; opine on any §2(d) likelihood-of-confusion bar and recommend a goods/services description scoped to entertainment/creative production. The whisky and band marks look low-risk (different classes/fields) but should be confirmed, not assumed.

• Canonical: emberkiln.studio (chosen + secured). Reinforces "studio," rhymes with the graphene.fm meaningful-TLD logic. emberkiln.app is also available (defensive + a future product-surface option; 308-redirect to .studio for now). emberkiln.com is taken/parked — keep an eye on it but .studio is the legitimate canonical.
• Handles: secure @emberkiln (or @emberkilnstudio) across IG / X / TikTok / YouTube in the same sitting — handle consistency beats extra defensive TLDs.

Honest caveat

This is informal landscape research, not a live register pull. A formal attorney clearance is still the gate before a full public launch / intent-to-use filing. The name is in use internally (this rename) but treat trademark as open.
